Arkansas’ Legislative Process…

become a member of the
Legislative Contact Program
The Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Legislative Contact Program is comprised of volunteer members who have agreed to establish a rapport and maintain a liaison between the CPA profession and members of the Arkansas General Assembly and the United States Congress in Washington, D.C. This legislative contact network conveys the profession’s views on issues being considered by lawmakers.
Voice in Government
ASCPA Members have an opportunity to impact laws affecting the CPA profession. The Legislative Contacts, active in their professional Society and communities, also network and build relationships with elected officials.
Time Commitment
Some ASCPA Legislative Contacts spend as little as two or three hours a year; others become more involved in order to build a professional rapport with elected officials. There are no regular meetings, but Legislative Contacts are invited to attend events for legislators which are designed to enhance communications between the officials and CPAs. Legislative Contacts request action from officials, usually in the form of a vote, on issues impacting the profession. Briefing papers about the legislation are provided for the official and the Contact. Contacts are also encouraged to become personally involved in campaigns by donating time and/or money to the candidates of their choice.
Relationship Building
Legislative Contacts do not have to be constituents of the elected official. They come from all segments of the Society’s membership. Our Contacts may be a close personal friend, campaign treasurer, neighbor, business associate, relative, or former schoolmate. The working relationship may consist of an occasional phone call or letter asking for support for the CPA profession. The most important aspect of being a Contact is the willingness to communicate with an elected official.
